| Problem | OEM Design Flaw | Resulting Issue | Impact | |
| Problem #1 | The plastic hinge pin bends under load. | Allows the flapper to over-rotate, causing switch misalignment. | Nozzle boot doesn’t work. | Use sturdy aluminum shaft. |
| Problem #2 | The tapered hinge pin causes side-to-side movement and flapper binding. | Reed switch misalignment, so no nozzle detection. | Nozzle boot doesn’t work. | Use aluminum hinge pin, with no taper and larger bushings. |
| Problem #3 | The round shaft provides limited engagement. | Accelerated wear allows the flapper to over-rotate. | Nozzle boot doesn’t work. | Use aluminum hinge pin, with square shaft. |
The nozzle boot is one of the hardest-working components on every fuel dispenser, yet it is often one of the most common sources of dispenser downtime. The OEM nozzle boot used on Wayne Ovation, Ovation2, and Anthem dispensers is prone to wear, binding, and misalignment, leading to flapper sticking, inaccurate nozzle detection, unnecessary service calls, and frustrated customers.
Many technicians attempt temporary repairs by installing screws or other field modifications to limit flap travel. While these fixes may restore operation for a short time, they fail to address the underlying design flaws and can leave dispensers looking poorly maintained.
Freedom Electronics engineered a better nozzle boot. The Freedom Engineered FE-WU003091-0002 is a direct replacement for OEM-equivalent part numbers WU003091-0002 and WU003091-0003, specifically redesigned to eliminate the common failure points found in the original OEM design.
Every Freedom Engineered nozzle boot ships fully assembled with the reed switch already installed and includes the required mounting bracket for supported applications. Simply remove the existing assembly and install the new nozzle boot—no modifications, adjustments, or additional assembly required.

The OEM hinge pin is manufactured from plastic and can bend under load. Its rounded profile and limited engagement allow the flapper to rotate beyond its intended travel, leading many technicians to install screws as makeshift positive stops.
The OEM tapered hinge pin allows the flapper to shift from side to side. As wear increases, the flap begins to bind, overextend, and move away from the reed switch. Once the magnet is no longer properly aligned, the dispenser may fail to recognize when the nozzle has been returned.

The OEM round shaft provides limited engagement with the flapper, allowing it to rotate as the assembly wears. This movement contributes to premature failure and inconsistent nozzle detection.
The Freedom Engineered nozzle boot isn’t just another replacement—it corrects the design flaws responsible for many common nozzle boot failures.
Freedom Electronics develops Freedom Engineered products to solve known OEM failure points. Instead of simply reproducing original components, our engineering team redesigns critical parts to improve durability, simplify installation, reduce maintenance costs, and increase equipment reliability in the field.
