When people think about career growth, they often imagine climbing a tall corporate ladder in a large organization. But for many professionals, some of the most fulfilling and rewarding opportunities come from working at small companies – places where every person matters and every role makes a difference.
In the world of retail petroleum and service industries, there are a few very large organizations with thousands of employees, but many companies are made up of tight-knit teams, often 20 employees or fewer. Whether you’re a technician in the field, part of a customer service team, or helping manage day-to-day operations, smaller organizations offer unique advantages that are easy to overlook.
In a small company, job descriptions aren’t confined to narrow swim lanes. Employees often take on a wide range of responsibilities, sometimes wearing multiple hats in a single day. That variety can be a fast track for learning, building confidence, and developing cross-functional skills that are highly valuable over the long term.
In large organizations, it’s easy to feel like just another number. In smaller companies, you’re more likely to be known by name. Your work is visible, your contributions are noticed, and your ideas are more likely to be heard. That kind of connection builds trust and a strong sense of purpose.
Career growth isn’t just about promotions. At small companies, growth can mean leading a new project, developing a new process, or being the go-to expert in your area. With fewer layers of management, it’s often easier to take on leadership responsibilities early and make a measurable impact.
Smaller teams foster a culture of accountability and ownership. When you’re part of a close-knit group, everyone’s effort matters—and that often leads to a stronger sense of pride in the work. It’s not uncommon to see employees going above and beyond, not because they have to, but because they genuinely care.
Perhaps most importantly, small company environments often feel more personal. The wins are shared, the challenges are tackled together, and relationships run deeper. People often describe these workplaces as more than just jobs—they’re communities.
Not everyone’s ideal career path is the same. But for those who value variety, visibility, and the chance to make a real difference every day, small companies can offer something uniquely rewarding. If you’re part of a small business, chances are you’re already experiencing just how meaningful that work can be.
If you are looking for employment, don’t rule out small companies – there are plenty of opportunities out there where you can find a fulfilling career.
Until next time,

As an aftermarket supplier, I’ve grown accustomed to overcoming the stigma that our parts are somehow “less than” the OEM. It’s a perception rooted more in habit than fact. I’m not a printer manufacturer, and I don’t claim to be—but here’s the truth most people miss: neither are the OEMs.
OEMs today are often large corporations focused on what’s next—dedicating their engineering resources to the next-generation model or next breakthrough product. That’s where their attention goes. And while they chase tomorrow’s technology, who’s focused on protecting the capital you’ve already invested in today’s equipment?
That’s where Freedom Electronics steps in.
We bring engineering expertise not just to match the OEM—but to improve on it. We simplify complex assemblies, solve recurring failures, and engineer parts that often outperform the originals in reliability and longevity. Every component we produce is backed by a best-in-class warranty, because we know performance isn’t just about specs—it’s about trust.
Being aftermarket doesn’t mean being second-best. It means being focused—on the parts you still rely on, the printers you still use, and the equipment that’s still making you money. Our job is to make what you already own work harder, last longer, and cost less to maintain.
That’s not a shortcut. That’s a smart investment.

Favorite Project
FE-UPPU, which was one of the first design projects that I worked on from beginning to end at Freedom. I started with reverse engineering the OEM boards, made design choices to help create the universal aspect of the board, wrote code and made schematics, did site visits for field installs, and followed through to production release.
Favorite parts of working for Freedom:
Diverse projects and a good team environment which has helped me develop new engineering related skills outside of my main role, including mechanical CAD design and PCB design.
Still using legacy Wayne SPM keypads (892638-006 and 892638-106)? Replacements (SPM 2.5 keypads, W2894472-002) are often expensive, upgrade-heavy, and require certified techs so it pays to keep your current keypads running strong.
Every extra month of use helps avoid the cost and complexity of premature upgrades. Stick with these best practices to keep your legacy keypads functioning longer—and smarter.
